Wheeling, West Virginia
Ohio River (Heritage Port Area)
Wheeling’s stretch of the Ohio is loaded with channel and flathead catfish, hybrid striped bass, white bass, and sauger. Fish near bridge pilings, floodwalls, and eddies using cut bait, minnows, or jigs. Heritage Port provides excellent shoreline access right in town.
Wheeling Creek (Pike Island Lock & Dam to Downtown)
Wheeling Creek is a productive tributary offering smallmouth bass, sunfish, trout (seasonally stocked), and rock bass. Best fished with light tackle—try spinners, small crankbaits, or soft plastics near riffles, boulders, and undercut banks.

Oglebay Park Lakes (Schrader & Upper Lakes)
Within Oglebay Resort, these small lakes are regularly stocked with trout and also hold catfish and bluegill. Great for beginners and families, with well-maintained piers and trails. Fly fishing is also popular in early spring when trout are active.
Tomlinson Run Lake (About 45 minutes north)
A serene, forested lake in Tomlinson Run State Park offering bass, bluegill, crappie, and stocked trout. No gas motors allowed, making it ideal for canoes and kayaks. Cast near fallen timber and shoreline vegetation in early morning or late evening.
