Blue River (Minor Park Area)
This spring-fed urban stream winds through south Kansas City and holds smallmouth bass, sunfish, and stocked trout in winter months. Fish rocky pools and riffles with soft plastics, spinners, or flies. Access is easy via trails, and the river feels surprisingly wild in places.
James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area (Lee’s Summit)
A fishing haven just southeast of the city, this conservation area features over a dozen stocked lakes and ponds full of bass, bluegill, catfish, and trout (seasonal). Electric motor boats are allowed, and each pond has its own charm. Ideal for anglers of all skill levels.

Lake Jacomo (Fleming Park)
A scenic, 970-acre reservoir known for largemouth bass, crappie, hybrid striped bass, and catfish. Shoreline access is plentiful, but boats unlock its full potential. Troll the deeper channels or cast near submerged timber and docks for best results.
Penn Valley Lake (Downtown)
A stocked urban pond just minutes from the Power & Light District, Penn Valley Lake is home to channel catfish, bluegill, and seasonally stocked trout. It’s great for a quick lunchtime cast or teaching kids how to fish—with the skyline in the background.
