Hiawassee, Georgia
Lake Chatuge (Bell Creek Area)
The crown jewel of Hiawassee, Lake Chatuge offers excellent fishing for spotted bass, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and hybrid striped bass. The Bell Creek arm is a local favorite, especially in spring and fall when fish move shallow. Anglers do well near submerged timber, rocky points, and brush piles using jigs, spinnerbaits, and live minnows. Early morning and dusk provide the best surface activity and views.
Hiawassee River (Below Lake Chatuge Dam)
This cool tailwater section of the Hiawassee River is stocked with rainbow and brown trout, especially in spring and fall. Fly anglers and light-spinning enthusiasts enjoy the slow pools and riffles downstream of the dam. Dry flies, small nymphs, and spinners work well during clear, low-flow conditions. Be mindful of water release schedules for safety and access.

Upper Bell Creek
A scenic, small mountain stream feeding into Lake Chatuge, Bell Creek is known for wild and stocked trout in its cooler upper reaches. Wading anglers can work small pools and runs with ultralight gear or fly rods. The setting is remote and peaceful, with rhododendron thickets and cascading waters. It’s a great spot for solitude and stealthy casting.
Hamilton Gardens Pond (Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds)
This small, landscaped pond sits near the fairgrounds and offers a casual setting for fishing bluegill, catfish, and the occasional bass. It’s a great choice for families, kids, or visitors staying close to town. Use worms, small crankbaits, or floating baits near the bank or footbridges. Though not a trophy destination, it’s perfect for a relaxing afternoon by the water.
