Asheville, NC
French Broad River (Carrier Park Area)
This broad, flowing river supports smallmouth bass, catfish, and muskie in its deeper pools and gentle shoals. Kayak anglers love this stretch, especially near drop-offs and island eddies. The current is gentle, the banks wide, and the water surprisingly productive.
Lake Julian
A warm-water lake just south of town, Lake Julian offers bank and pier access for bass, catfish, and crappie. The lake is warmed by a power plant, keeping the bite active year-round. It’s ideal for low-key fishing with kids or an afternoon picnic-and-cast.

Davidson River (Pisgah National Forest)
About 40 minutes from Asheville, this iconic trout stream is regularly stocked and beloved by fly anglers. Clear, cold water and long riffles make it great for dry flies and nymphs alike. The scenery, with mossy rocks and deep hollows, is worth the trip alone.
Bent Creek
A smaller tributary off the French Broad, Bent Creek winds through forest and meadow, holding pockets of wild trout and panfish. Light tackle or small streamers work best in the shallow, shady bends. It’s a peaceful spot for a short hike-and-cast.
