Snake River (Downtown Greenbelt Area)
Running right through town, this stretch of the Snake River offers easy access and solid fishing for rainbow and brown trout, as well as occasional bass and mountain whitefish. Cast near rocks, seams, and bridge pilings with nymphs, streamers, or spinners. Early morning and dusk are prime times, especially during hatch activity. Trails and parks along the Greenbelt provide excellent bank access for wading or walk-and-cast fishing.
South Fork Snake River (Heise to Swan Valley)
About 30 minutes from town, this world-famous tailwater is revered for its wild cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout. Float fishing is most popular, though there are wade-access spots near boat ramps and pull-offs. The scenery is stunning, and dry fly fishing in summer is top-tier. Nymph rigs and streamers produce year-round, particularly in deeper runs and undercut banks.

Gem Lake (Just South of Town)
This reservoir near Shelley is a great warmwater option, holding bass, crappie, perch, and catfish. It’s a solid choice for bait anglers, kayakers, or anyone looking for a change from trout. Try fishing early morning or evening along reed beds and submerged timber. It’s less pressured than other local waters and great for relaxed outings.

While small and seasonal, the canal near Ryder Park offers a surprising number of panfish and small trout, especially during spring and early summer flows. Great for ultralight gear or kids, with calm water and low banks for easy casting. Use worms, corn, or small jigs for steady action. It’s a quiet, tucked-away spot close to downtown.
